I don't think we have to worry about it, the apocalypse will wipe most of us out, but if nothing happens and we continue at our current pace, we'll be borg in no time. Face mounted camera phones, nanotech, constant monitoring of every aspect of every human life, animals get to vote, other bad things.

There would be no need to prepare for such an event because if there is enough radiation to melt metal you would be killed instantly. You would die so fast that you wouldn't even feel it... If it were day time. It is best not to think about what would happen to the people on the other side of the planet though. They wouldn't last very long though.
